Indian court grants bail to British Sikh blogger — Dawn

An Indian court has granted bail to British Sikh blogger Jagtar Singh Johal, who had been held in custody for nearly nine years. As Dawn reports, his relatives and human rights advocates expect him to leave prison in the coming days.

Detention in 2017

Johal, who is from Dumbarton in western Scotland, was detained in November 2017 while in India for his own wedding. He was detained in a case involving an alleged conspiracy to murder right-wing Hindu leaders.

Reaction from family and MP

The blogger's brother, Gurpreet Singh Johal, said in a video published on X that Jagtar would be released on bail in the coming days. He called it “really, really good news.”

In a statement distributed by the British charity Reprieve, Gurpreet Singh Johal said that the family had waited and fought for this moment for a long time. UK Member of Parliament Douglas McAllister also welcomed the decision and said on social media that his constituent had been held in conditions of “arbitrary detention.”
