U.S. Court Halts Execution of Robert Roberson in “Shaken Baby” Case

A Texas court has granted a stay of execution for Robert Roberson, a man sentenced to death in 2003 for allegedly killing his two-year-old daughter. His conviction was based on the disputed medical theory of “shaken baby syndrome,” which many experts now question.

Roberson’s defense argued that his daughter died from pneumonia and that prescribed medications may have worsened her condition. The court acknowledged evolving medical research and agreed to pause the execution, citing the need for accuracy in cases involving capital punishment.
While the court did not approve a new trial, the stay of execution temporarily halts Roberson’s death sentence, scheduled for October 16. After more than two decades on death row, his legal team continues to seek full exoneration.
