Taiwan has issued a strong response to Trump regarding independence

Taiwan has issued a strong response to Trump regarding independence

Taiwan has publicly reaffirmed its sovereignty and stated that it does not answer to China, following remarks by Donald Trump, who spoke out against supporting the island’s independence. Tensions surrounding Taiwan have escalated once again amid high-level contacts between the U.S. and China. This was stated by Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, according to Politico.

Taiwan reacted sharply to U.S. President Donald Trump’s statements regarding the island’s independence, reiterating that it considers itself a sovereign and democratic state not under the control of the People’s Republic of China, and this position was voiced amid diplomatic signals between Washington and Beijing.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated explicitly: “Taiwan is a sovereign and independent democratic state and is not subordinate to the People’s Republic of China,” emphasizing that no external political statements alter the island’s status in its own view. Taipei’s reaction came in response to remarks by Trump, who stated that he “does not support the idea of any independence” while commenting on possible scenarios in the event of an escalation of the situation surrounding Taiwan and potential Chinese intervention.

The situation is further complicated by the fact that the United States does not officially recognize Taiwan as a separate state, yet continues to cooperate with the island and supply it with weapons, which regularly provokes a sharp reaction from Beijing and accusations of interference in China’s internal affairs.

The Chinese authorities, for their part, have once again emphasized that they consider Taiwan an integral part of their territory and are demanding that the U.S. cease all military supplies, warning that the issue of the island remains the most critical and sensitive in bilateral relations.

Against this backdrop, according to Chinese state media, Xi Jinping emphasized the importance of stability in relations with the U.S., but at the same time warned that ignoring the Taiwan issue could lead to a serious escalation, even to the point of conflict, which further underscores the fragility of the balance in the region.
