Accra Technical University launches paramedical trichology programme
Accra Technical University in Ghana, together with Abrantie College, has launched an HND programme in paramedical trichology. It combines beauty industry practice with scientific and medically oriented training in hair and scalp care.
The programme is intended to enable workers in the beauty and wellness sector to turn practical experience into an officially recognised professional qualification. As MyJoyOnline reports, the field in Ghana had previously relied largely on informal training and practical experience.
Training in a new specialisation
Ghana’s Deputy Minister of Education, Clement Apaak, said at the programme’s launch that the country’s education system must respond to the emergence of new professions and changes in labour market demand. TVET Director Rejoice Dankwa noted that the programme reflects the need to expand technical and vocational education into fields where demand for specialised skills is growing.

Students are expected to gain practical and scientific knowledge to identify and work with conditions related to hair and the scalp. The programme also provides for obtaining a recognised academic qualification.
Opportunity to continue education
Accra Technical University Vice-Chancellor Professor Amevi Akapo said specialised training is needed to bridge the gap between practical experience and the scientific knowledge required for professional work. Abrantie College believes that a structured academic pathway will enable specialists who received informal training to continue their education at higher levels.
