The global ocean surface temperature in July 2026 reached its highest level since records began. This could exacerbate global warming and negatively impact marine ecosystems.
According to the Copernicus Climate Change Service, the average sea surface temperature outside the polar regions was 20.96°C, surpassing the previous record of 20.89°C set in 2023.
Experts also note that exceptionally warm waters are being observed in the Atlantic, the western Mediterranean, and the tropical Pacific, where the El Niño climate phenomenon is gaining strength.
Ocean warming reduces the ocean’s ability to absorb carbon dioxide, disrupts marine ecosystems, and contributes to extreme weather events.
