U.S. President Donald Trump welcomed the prospect of direct talks between Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Vladimir Putin, calling their potential meeting “wonderful.” He also reiterated the importance of U.S. support for Ukraine amid the war.

Trump commented on Ukrainian President Zelenskyy’s open letter to Putin, in which Zelenskyy proposed holding a face-to-face meeting in a neutral country. The U.S. president stated that he was “very pleased” by the prospect of such a meeting.

“It would be wonderful if Zelenskyy and Putin met for talks,” Trump said, adding that both leaders are “very good people.”

At the same time, he highlighted Washington’s role in supporting Ukraine.

“Without our military and our equipment, Ukraine would not be able to continue fighting today. Without the equipment I provided them, Ukraine wouldn’t have lasted a day or two,” Trump emphasized.

He also spoke about the terms for resolving the conflict, stating that he expects mutual concessions from both sides.

“I have proposed these concessions, and, you know, we have put a lot of effort into this. I want each side to make certain concessions, and I think they will,” Trump said, according to the White House.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy published an open letter to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. The document formally proposes ending the war through direct bilateral talks between the leaders and implementing a complete ceasefire.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Moscow is allegedly ready for negotiations to end the war against Ukraine, but sees no willingness for dialogue on the Ukrainian side.

Putin is not changing course and continues to finance the war.
