Trump announces 50% tariffs on Canadian cars and steel from 2027

US President Donald Trump said that starting January 1, 2027, the United States will impose 50% tariffs on automobiles, auto parts and steel from Canada. Deutsche Welle reports.

Tariffs on automobiles and steel

Trump wrote that there would be no tariffs on products manufactured in the United States. He also said that Canada would “no longer be considered a US state.”

In another post, the US president sharply criticized Canada, calling it one of the most difficult countries in which to conduct trade. Trump also said that the United States does not need Canada, while Canada needs the United States.

Escalation of the trade dispute

Earlier, the United States had already announced 50% tariffs on a number of Canadian goods after trade negotiations broke down last week. In response, Canada promised to impose retaliatory tariffs.
