Trump proposes renaming Strait of Hormuz the ‘Trump Strait’
US President Donald Trump has proposed renaming the Strait of Hormuz the “Trump Strait.” In a post on Truth Social, he said that the waterway is allegedly under US control and raised the question of changing its name. CNBC reports.
Mechanism for changing the name
Trump wrote about his proposal on Wednesday, September 2. According to CNBC, it is unclear how the US president could implement the renaming of a strait located far from United States territory.
Less than a week earlier, Trump signed an order to change the name of Lake Ontario to “Lake America.” The document instructed US Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and his department to update the name in the US Geographic Names Information System. Canada rejected the renaming.
At the beginning of his second presidential term, Trump also announced the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America. Mexico and other US international partners did not support this change.

Oil transit through the strait
The Trump administration has repeatedly stated that Iran has lost control of the Strait of Hormuz. Before the start of the war in late February, approximately one-fifth of global oil trade passed through it, CNBC notes.
At the same time, transit through the waterway remains below pre-war levels. According to vessel-tracking services, it declined further in recent days amid the resumption of military strikes in the region following a pause of several weeks.
US Energy Secretary Chris Wright told CNBC that more than 17 million barrels of oil passed through the strait on Monday. He called it a wartime record. Before the war began on February 28, about 20 million barrels of crude oil and petroleum products were transported through the strait daily. The US administration claims that total oil exports from the region exceeded pre-war levels when accounting for Saudi Arabian and United Arab Emirates pipelines that bypass the strait.
