In Belgium, the reenactment of the Battle of Waterloo was canceled due to the heat

In Belgium, the annual reenactment of the Battle of Waterloo, scheduled for June 27–28, has been canceled due to an abnormal heat wave. The organizers stated that the safety of spectators, participants, volunteers, and emergency services is their top priority.

The reenactment is held annually on the historic battlefield near Brussels, where on June 18, 1815, Allied forces under the command of the Duke of Wellington dealt a decisive defeat to Napoleon Bonaparte’s army.

In recent days, temperatures in Belgium have been approaching record highs for June. The extreme heat has also affected a number of other European countries, including France.

In Brussels, due to the record-breaking heat, the European Commission was forced to partially shut down the air conditioning system at its headquarters. The decision affected several floors of the Berlaymont building and has already impacted working conditions for staff. The institution notes that these measures are temporary and related to the extreme weather conditions.

Paris has imposed a temporary ban on alcohol consumption in public places due to the record-breaking heatwave that has swept across France and much of Europe. The decision was made amid an overwhelmed healthcare system and a sharp rise in hospitalizations. The temperature in the city reached +40.9 °C, setting a new record high for June.
