A man in Brisbane has been charged with six counts of rape

In the suburb of Brookfield, west of Brisbane, Australia, a 32-year-old man has been charged with six counts of rape in connection with a case involving a 23-year-old woman. According to police, he is also charged with stalking, assault with intent to rape, assault causing bodily harm, and unlawful confinement.

Detective Superintendent Andrew Massingham stated that on Thursday at approximately 6:30 a.m., the woman was walking through Brookfield with a family member, but they became separated. According to police, the man, who was driving through the area on his way to work, approached her from behind and dragged her into nearby bushes.

Police say the alleged assault lasted “some time,” after which the man left the scene and drove to work. Afterward, according to law enforcement, the woman crossed a stream and a patch of brush, made her way to the Brookfield Showgrounds Oval sports field, and contacted her family and the police.

According to Massingham, the man’s car was identified after he, according to investigators, drove past the scene at the end of his workday. He was detained on a nearby street. Police emphasized that all charges relate to a single incident and that no other individuals are being sought in connection with this case.

A police spokesperson also reported that following media reports, two witnesses provided dashcam footage that helped identify the suspected assailant. The woman sustained injuries, is at home with her family, and is receiving medical and psychological care. Police presence in the area will be increased in the coming days, and the crime scene will remain cordoned off. The man is expected to appear before the Brisbane Magistrates Court.
