UK urged to prepare to defend Europe without U.S. support
In the United Kingdom, calls have been made for London and its European NATO allies to prepare for a scenario in which the United States may not provide support in the event of a crisis. Lawmakers stress that Europe should be ready to ensure its own security independently amid possible shifts in Washington’s position.
The warning was issued by an influential committee of peers and MPs in the British Parliament, according to Sky News.
Tensions between the administration of Donald Trump and the government of Keir Starmer could also threaten the reliability of critical pillars of the UK’s national security. These include the maintenance of Trident missiles used on the Royal Navy’s nuclear deterrent submarines, intelligence sharing, and access to programs such as the F-35 fighter jet, according to a report by the Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy.
The committee urged London to “plan for a shift away from bilateral reliance on the United States.”
It also advised the UK, Europe, and Canada to develop a plan for “a transition toward greater European leadership within NATO.”
The statement, published on Friday, comes after President Trump once again criticized his allies — including the United Kingdom — for choosing not to join his war against Iran.
Iran has threatened the United Kingdom over allowing U.S. forces to use its bases.
