Two men arrested in Britain on suspicion of preparing terrorist attack — The National

In Manchester, United Kingdom, two men aged around 30 were arrested on suspicion of planning potential terrorist attacks against the Jewish community. As The National reports, the arrests took place as part of an ongoing investigation led by counterterrorism police units.

Arrests and investigation

The men were arrested on Newton Street in Manchester on suspicion of offences under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000. They were taken to a police station in London for questioning, where they remained in custody.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans, the UK police’s senior national coordinator for counterterrorism, said the arrests were part of an ongoing proactive investigation into a suspected plot to attack the Jewish community in the Manchester area. According to her, law enforcement officers are pursuing several lines of inquiry, and the investigation will continue in the coming days.

Security measures

Police said they do not see a current threat to the public in connection with the case, but urged people to remain vigilant and report any concerns to law enforcement. Counterterrorism units are also working with local police, providing support and security advice in areas with Jewish communities, including during major Jewish holidays.

The arrests came a year after an attack on the Heaton Park Hebrew Synagogue in Manchester during Yom Kippur, in which two worshippers were killed. Police obtained warrants to keep both men currently detained in custody until Sunday, September 27.
