Finland investigates attack on SDP candidate in Espoo — YLE News

Finnish police are investigating a violent incident related to the election campaign work of a Social Democratic Party of Finland (SDP) parliamentary candidate that took place in Espoo. West Uusimaa Police reported two incidents that occurred on Saturday and were related to the election campaign.

In the case involving the SDP, a man is suspected of petty assault and interfering with the freedom of political activity. Party chair Antti Lindtman previously reported an attack on the candidate on social media, YLE News writes.

Risk of violence ahead of the elections

Personal security expert Tommi Nyström, who has worked in the field of personal protection for decades, said that the risk of violent situations will increase as parliamentary elections approach. According to him, aggressive and threatening discussions on social media are an indicator of tension.

Nyström stressed that online threats should not be underestimated. He advised paying particular attention to personal messages mentioning the time, place or possible method of an attack. In such cases, he said, it is important to contact the police.

Responsibility of parties

According to the expert, people who act without significant publicity and are capable of attacking impulsively may be more dangerous. To reduce such risks, political parties should organize security training and practical exercises for candidates and campaign teams.

Nyström noted that police in Finland cannot ensure the safety of all candidates and election events, so practical responsibility for the security of such events lies with the parties. He also advised candidates and campaign teams to assess campaign event venues in advance.
