Banned gas sprays found on suspect in Finland border crossing case
In Ilomantsi, Finland, a foreign national suspected of illegally crossing the state border from Russia is also suspected of a minor firearms offence. The person had two gas sprays that are considered illegal firearms in Finland.
Detention in the Mutalahti area
As YLE News reports, the North Karelia Border Guard detained a foreign national late on Saturday evening, August 1, in the Mutalahti area of Ilomantsi. According to border guards, the person may have crossed the state border through terrain in the Mutalahti area.
Border guards found the person based on their own observations. The detention took place peacefully.

Explanation regarding the sprays
Investigation leader Tomi Salmi said that during questioning, the person, who applied for asylum, explained having the gas sprays by the need to protect themselves from predatory animals.
The investigation is determining whether the person knew that such sprays are illegal firearms in Finland. Salmi noted that in some similar cases, no charges have been brought. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
