In Ghana, lawyer warns of possible tighter export inspections — MyJoyOnline

In Ghana, Ghana School of Law lecturer Lenin Nicholas Anane Agyei said that recent drug interception cases could lead to more thorough inspections of legitimate Ghanaian exports abroad. In his view, concerns about drug trafficking could harm not only the security sector but also the country’s legal businesses.

As MyJoyOnline reports, the lawyer voiced this assessment on the Newsfile program on JoyNews on September 26. He noted that additional scrutiny of cargo from Ghana in foreign markets could mean inspections and delays for exporters of legitimate goods.

Reputational consequences

Anane Agyei described the economic consequences of Ghana’s reputation as a possible route for moving drugs as serious. According to him, increased controls over Ghanaian shipments in foreign jurisdictions could affect companies exporting legal products.

The comments came amid a series of recent drug interception operations and calls to strengthen measures to prevent Ghana from being used as a transit route for narcotic substances.

Gaps in the system

The lawyer said that the recent cases point to shortcomings in security and drug-control systems. In his view, responsible officials should regularly assess existing mechanisms, identify gaps and introduce measures to address them.

Anane Agyei also suggested that the volume of drugs intercepted over a relatively short period may indicate that international drug cartels are beginning to view Ghana as a more convenient route for moving drugs. He urged the authorities to identify weaknesses in the control system in order to prevent drug traffickers from exploiting them.
