Greece may ban electric scooters for people under 17

On July 21, the Greek parliament will consider a bill to tighten regulations on the use of electric scooters and prohibit individuals under the age of 17 from riding them. The initiative also prohibits companies from selling or renting these vehicles to users who have not reached that age. 

The bill requires mandatory registration of electric scooters and mandatory insurance for riders, which should make it easier to identify the owners of each vehicle. In addition, stricter fines are being introduced for violations of the rules, particularly for riding on roads with a speed limit exceeding 50 km/h.

Previously, Greece had already required electric scooter riders to wear protective helmets and banned riding while wearing headphones or using a phone. The new restrictions are a response to a series of traffic accidents involving scooters, in which minors were predominantly involved.

As a reminder, the parliamentary committee on transportation and infrastructure has officially recommended that the Verkhovna Rada adopt a bill establishing clear rules for users of electric vehicles.
