Three garbage collectors were killed in a traffic accident in Yeoncheon

Three household waste collection workers were killed when a garbage truck collided with a dump truck in Yeongcheon, North Gyeongsang Province. The accident occurred around 4:03 a.m. on Wednesday at the Dodon intersection, according to the Korea Herald, citing police.

All three people inside the 6-metric-ton garbage truck died at the scene: two men in their 60s and one man in his 40s. The driver of the 25-metric-ton dump truck, a man in his 70s, suffered serious injuries. He was taken to the hospital.

The victims worked for a contractor hired by Yeoncheon to collect household waste. According to law enforcement, they were on their way to work for an early shift collecting trash when the accident occurred.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the accident. The trucks collided as they entered an intersection where flashing signals were in operation at the time. This traffic light mode is in effect at the intersection from midnight to 5:00 a.m. Investigators are reviewing footage from surveillance cameras and dashcams to determine how both trucks entered the intersection.
