Chinese hospital leaves patient inside MRI machine for six hours by mistake
In Wuhan, Hubei Province, a patient was accidentally left inside an MRI machine at Tongji Hospital after completing a medical scan. The man remained inside the machine for nearly six hours until he was discovered by a cleaner early the next morning.
The incident was reported by Chinese media via WeChat
According to the report, the situation occurred late in the evening during a staff shift change. After the scan was completed, medical personnel failed to remove the patient from the MRI room, leaving him inside the machine.
The man reportedly called for help intermittently throughout the night, but no staff members heard him.
Hospital response
Following the incident, the hospital launched an internal investigation and temporarily suspended the staff members responsible for the procedure.
The clinic stated that it is maintaining communication with the patient’s family regarding possible compensation and confirmed that no harm to the patient’s health was recorded.
Hospital officials also announced a broader safety review of medical procedures and staff protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Similar cases in China
This is not the first such case reported in China. In a previous incident in Zhejiang Province, a patient remained trapped in an MRI machine for around three hours before managing to get out and call for help.
Investigators at the time also attributed the situation to staff inattention.
