Nearly 25,000 tonnes of waste collected in Limassol, Cyprus, over two years — Cyprus Mail

In Limassol, Cyprus, the municipal sanitation service collected 24,700 tonnes of waste over two years, which the municipality described as a record figure. The volume included pruned branches, tyres, abandoned vehicles, bulky items and mixed waste, Cyprus Mail reports, citing the municipality.

Breakdown of collected waste

In 2024–2025, the service cleared 5,482 tonnes of waste from land plots, 6,328 tonnes of mixed materials, 2,975 tonnes of bulky waste, 2,369 tonnes of rubbish during road cleaning and 2,734 tonnes of pruned branches. Smaller quantities of tyres and discarded wood were also collected.

The service received another 4,805 tonnes of mixed waste from the municipality’s technical department. Workers also cleared rubbish from land plots: 1,300 plots in 2024–2025 and 1,733 from 2025 to the present.

District clean-ups and abandoned vehicles

From April to July 2026, the municipality conducted special clean-up campaigns in 12 districts of Limassol. More than 104 tonnes of rubbish were collected during these activities, including 56 tonnes of bulky waste.

The municipality sent notices to owners of abandoned cars and other objects, after which they removed more than 1,800 vehicles and items. The municipality itself removed another 545 abandoned cars and objects because owners failed to comply with the requirements. The municipality said it plans new targeted campaigns for a clean and green city.
