An attempt may have been made on Iziah Utai in Marbella — ABC News Australia

Australian criminal underworld figure Iziah Utai, who is outside Australia, may have survived an attempted attack in Marbella, Spain. According to ABC News Australia, the incident occurred this week at the residence where he was staying.

Reports of an attack

ABC sources said armed attackers allegedly tried to enter Utai's residence. According to them, law enforcement officers are checking reports of a failed attempt to break into the house.

Utai, whom ABC describes as a senior member of the self-proclaimed Coconut Cartel group, reportedly mentioned the incident in a social media post on Tuesday. New South Wales Police and the Australian Federal Police received requests for comment from ABC.

According to ABC, New South Wales Police are seeking Utai in connection with his alleged involvement in an underworld murder in May 2025.

Group confrontation

The Coconut Cartel has been in conflict with the Alameddine crime family in Sydney over the past year. As ABC reports, police link fatal shootings, arson attacks, assaults and kidnappings to this confrontation.

In May, Lorenzo Lemalu, whom ABC describes as the leader of the Coconut Cartel, was shot dead in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. In February, Iziah Utai's father, former rugby league player Matt Utai, was shot at near a residence in the Sydney suburb of Greenacre. According to ABC, Matt Utai has not been charged with involvement in organised crime.

A few days later, Iziah Utai's house in Guildford West was set on fire, while another house linked to his family was shot at.
