At least 341 foreigners missing in Nepal after sudden floods
In Nepal, after devastating sudden floods that claimed at least 160 lives, at least 341 foreign nationals are among those missing. The Japan Times reports, citing official data and statements by representatives of various countries.
Nepal attracts tourists, travelers and mountaineers who come to the Himalayas, including to climb the world’s highest peaks, among them Everest. Some of those missing were in the country as part of tourist groups.
Ukrainian citizens among the missing
Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Nepal’s tourist police consider 53 Ukrainian citizens missing. They include a group of 46 Ukrainian tourists with whom Nepalese authorities have lost contact.
According to the Nepal Tourism Board, those missing include 142 Indian citizens, 17 Malaysian citizens, 12 UK citizens, four South African citizens, three Americans and one Dutch citizen. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed that 34 Australians are missing, while South Korea’s Foreign Ministry reported losing contact with nine hydropower workers in Rasuwa District.

Reports from tourist groups
Malaysia’s Foreign Ministry said that the country’s embassy in Kathmandu had received information from travel agencies about a loss of contact with 11 Malaysian citizens who were believed to be in Rasuwa District. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said she was concerned by media reports about five missing Japanese citizens.
Portugal’s Foreign Ministry reported that a woman and a man were missing. At the same time, Italy’s Foreign Ministry said that two Italians and their guide had been cut off above the landslide site but were already receiving assistance.
Separate tourist groups also reported missing foreigners whose citizenship has not yet been established: 77 people were traveling with Trekkers Society, 26 with Kailash Journey, and another eight with Richa Tours & Travels. The Nepal Tourism Board also reported 93 missing citizens of the country.
