In the city of Mangu in Nigeria’s Plateau State, armed men attacked a vegetable market on Friday evening. Two women and a young man were killed, while several others were injured, Premium Times Nigeria reports.

Shooting near the market

Bulusa Dabit, president of the Mwaghavul Development Association, said that at about 8:00 p.m., the attackers fired several times at a vehicle leaving the vegetable market in Mangu. According to him, two women and a young man were killed in the shooting.

The attack occurred as vendors and shoppers were preparing to close for the day. The gunshots caused panic, and people tried to flee in different directions. As the outlet reported, many people were injured in the stampede. The identities of the three victims were not immediately established, while those seriously injured were taken to Jos University Teaching Hospital.

Call for an investigation

Another source for the outlet, John Haruna, also reported that the sudden gunshots caused panic among people at the market. Bulusa Dabit condemned the attack and called on security agencies to use intelligence and technology to identify those involved.

The attack occurred hours after the Mwaghavul Development Association reported ongoing threats to communities in Mangu and called for an immediate investigation into recent killings in the local government area. The organization also claims that more than 750 Mwaghavul people have been killed in attacks since 2023. At the time of publication, police had not officially commented on the incident.
