Man detained in Nigeria on suspicion of house arson
In Calabar, Nigeria, police detained 41-year-old Bassey Ekpo on suspicion of setting fire to a house in the 8 Miles area. As Premium Times Nigeria reports, the incident was reported to the Ikpa Omin police station by the house resident, Ekemini Stephen.
Detention of the suspect
Cross River State police spokesperson Sunday Eytokpa said that Stephen was at church during the fire. According to him, a neighbor called the man and told him that his house had been set on fire.
According to police, the neighbor, with the help of other residents, detained Ekpo and took him to the station. Law enforcement officers visited the scene, documented the incident, and took photographs as part of the investigation.

Statement about the mother
During an initial interrogation, Ekpo allegedly stated, according to police, that he had been sent to set the house on fire by his 61-year-old mother. Law enforcement officials did not disclose her name; according to their information, the woman is currently at large.
Police said that all persons whose involvement is established will be held accountable. Law enforcement officials did not specify the motive for the alleged arson or the connection between the suspect, his mother, and the house resident.
