In South Africa, father sentenced to life for murdering four-year-old daughter
In the village of Tshitale in South Africa’s Limpopo province, 39-year-old Tshilidzi Vincent Mudau was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his four-year-old daughter in December 2023. The Waterval Regional Court also sentenced him to 10 years in prison for arson, but the sentences will run concurrently, making the final sentence life imprisonment.
Application for a protection order
As TimesLIVE reports, on 4 December 2023, the child’s mother applied for a protection order against Mudau. National Prosecuting Authority of South Africa spokesperson Mashudu Malabi said the court heard that the man allegedly threatened to burn down her house and kill their daughter if the woman did not allow him access to the child.
Later that same day, the mother was informed that her house had been set on fire. While she was speaking with police at the scene, Mudau arrived, forcibly took the child and fled.

Circumstances of the case and sentence
The court heard that nearby, the man attacked the girl, inflicting multiple skull fractures. She later died from her injuries. Mudau was arrested shortly afterwards.
The accused pleaded not guilty to both charges. During the trial, he was represented by several defence lawyers, but later decided to represent himself. Prosecutor Lebogang Maluleke described the case during sentencing as a brutal manifestation of gender-based violence.
The prosecution also told the court that Mudau had eight previous convictions for violent crimes and showed no remorse. Limpopo Director of Public Prosecutions Ivy Thenga welcomed the sentence and said that South Africa’s National Prosecuting Authority continues to seek accountability for violent crimes.
