Three suspects in planned cash-in-transit robbery killed in shootout in South Africa — TimesLIVE

Three suspects whom law enforcement officers believe were involved in preparing an attack on cash-in-transit guards were killed in a shootout with police on the R80 highway in northern Pretoria, South Africa. Another suspect was detained, TimesLIVE reports.

Police say there was armed resistance

Police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said that an interagency team was following up on intelligence about individuals who allegedly planned to commit a robbery. The operation involved the South African Police Service tactical team, the anti-gang unit, the Gauteng Traffic Police air wing and private security companies through Business Against Crime South Africa.

According to Nevhuhulwi, law enforcement officers spotted a white Hyundai H1 on the highway and attempted to stop it by activating their flashing lights. She said the people in the vehicle opened fire on police officers, who returned fire. Three suspects sustained fatal injuries in the shootout.

Seized weapons will be examined

Police seized an AK-47 rifle and a 9mm pistol from the Hyundai H1. Another suspect, whom police believe to be linked to the same group, was detained in a Toyota Avanza. According to law enforcement, a 9mm pistol was also found on him.

Forensic experts worked at the scene. The seized weapons will be sent for ballistic examination to determine whether they may be connected to other crimes. Gauteng Deputy Provincial Police Commissioner Major General Fred Kekana commended the team's work aimed at countering cash-in-transit attacks and street robberies in the province.
