27 killed in two mass shootings in South Africa — Deutsche Welle

In South Africa, 27 people were killed and another 26 injured in two mass shootings west of Johannesburg and in Cape Town. Police are searching for the attackers, and the motive for the first attack is currently unknown.

Attack west of Johannesburg

In a bar west of Johannesburg, armed men killed 17 visitors and wounded another 15. The shooting occurred on Saturday at around 9:30 p.m. local time. Emergency services pronounced all 17 victims dead at the scene.

As Deutsche Welle reports, citing South African police, the attackers allegedly searched several visitors, took their mobile phones and left the scene in two unidentified vehicles. According to law enforcement, the suspects may have been armed with AK-47 assault rifles and pistols.

Shooting in Cape Town

A separate attack took place at an entertainment venue in Lwandle, Cape Town. There, armed men killed 10 people and wounded 11. Police said that five of those killed died at the scene. The shooting began at 1:46 a.m. local time.
