In South Africa, 569 women were killed between April and June — an average of about six per day. During the same three-month period, the country recorded a total of 5,427 murders, or nearly 60 per day, according to the latest statistics from the South African Police Service, cited by Daily Maverick.

Crime statistics

Another 1,052 women survived attempted murders. Of the 9,201 registered rape cases, women and children were victims in 8,814 cases.

The publication also cites a study by the Soul City Institute, according to which approximately 47.2% of all reported rapes occur in domestic settings — in the homes of victims or perpetrators.

The column mentions the discovery of women’s bodies in the East Rand area, including Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo, who did not return from a run. The author links these cases to the broader problem of violence which, in his view, has become commonplace in the country’s homes, schools and public spaces.

The author’s proposals

The author called on the leadership at the presidency responsible for women, youth and persons with disabilities to direct resources to the security sector, fund preventive measures in communities and ensure the implementation of relevant policies at all levels of government.

He also stressed the need to change toxic gender norms, involve civic and religious organizations in moral responsibility, and work with boys in schools. In the author’s view, countering gender-based violence requires not declarative solidarity, but practical action in communities.
