In South Korea, a drone helped find a missing woman
According to the Korea Herald, citing the local outlet Money Today, South Korean police used a drone to find a 45-year-old woman with intellectual disabilities who went missing in the city of Namyangju, Gyeonggi Province. About 27 minutes passed from the report to law enforcement to her discovery.
Search near a hospital
The woman’s father reported her missing to police at around 10:30 on July 14 while they were at a hospital. Police located her using a drone at around 10:57. Officers searching for the woman on the ground received information about her location and handed her over to her father.
Expanding the use of drones
In another case in Namyangju, drones helped find a 15-year-old boy who had run away from home. The search lasted slightly more than an hour.

South Korea’s National Police Agency allocated 4.2 billion won this year for drone-based patrols. This is 950 million won more than last year.
In June, the agency tested patrol cars equipped with artificial intelligence-based surveillance systems and drones in western Seoul. Feedback received during the testing is planned to be used to improve the system. Traffic patrol units of the South Jeolla provincial police already use unmanned aerial vehicles to supplement ground patrols, while North Gyeongsang provincial police introduced a drone surveillance system for highway patrols in July.
