Five suspected of murdering newborn in South Yorkshire

In Sheffield, South Yorkshire, United Kingdom, five people are being held in custody on suspicion of murdering a newborn girl. According to police, the child died from stab wounds.

Child found at a home

Police officers arrived at a home in Holywell Heights, in the Wincobank area of Sheffield, shortly before 6:00 on Sunday, August 30. They responded to a report concerning the safety of a baby, found the girl at the property, and her death was pronounced at the scene.

According to The Guardian World, seven people were initially arrested on suspicion of murder. Two of them, aged 26 and 37, were later released on bail. Police said on Tuesday that a post-mortem examination established that the girl died from stab wounds.

Investigation continues

South Yorkshire Police Detective Chief Inspector Tom Woodward said the child's death had deeply affected emergency services staff, paramedics and investigators conducting the murder investigation. He said police would examine all possible lines of inquiry to secure justice for the girl.

Woodward described the investigation as dynamic and urged residents not to speculate about the circumstances of the tragedy. The five suspects remain in custody after police obtained a warrant extending their detention. Specialist search teams continue to work in the Holywell Heights area.
