1.5 metric tons of methamphetamine worth 28.5 million euros were seized at the Port of Hamburg
Law enforcement officers discovered one and a half metric tons of crystalline methamphetamine at the German port of Hamburg. The value of the seized drugs is estimated at 28.5 million euros. The methamphetamine was found hidden in bags of rice.
The shipment was supposed to contain rice from Pakistan. However, during an X-ray inspection at the port, staff discovered one and a half metric tons of crystal methamphetamine instead of rice.
According to the prosecutor’s office, the drugs were confiscated. Authorities stated that there is no evidence suggesting they were intended for further distribution in Hamburg.
European ports have been used by criminal groups to smuggle drugs for many years. In March, customs and police officers seized 1.6 metric tons of cocaine in a shipment of bananas. That shipment also arrived at the Port of Hamburg from South America. The drugs, worth several tens of millions of euros, were discovered in a container from Ecuador.
Special equipment for inspecting cargo has now been installed at the Port of Hamburg to strengthen the fight against drug crime.
