More than half of library books could be removed in Russia

More than 50% of the book collections in Russian libraries could be at risk of confiscation if laws on “foreign agents” and “undesirable organizations” are applied to the letter. This was stated by Oleg Novikov, president of the “Exmo-AST” publishing group, at a meeting of the organizing committee for the support of literature, book publishing, and reading in the Russian Federation.

This was reported by Russian media.

According to him, not only books created with the participation of individuals or legal entities with “foreign agent” status may be subject to confiscation, but also publications containing their comments and annotations. Books published with the participation of organizations deemed “undesirable” by the authorities are also problematic.

Novikov noted that a significant portion of Russian classical, regional, and scientific literature published in the 1990s and 2000s falls into this category. Under current legislation, even dissertations and academic works that cite such sources may also be subject to confiscation. He emphasized that this situation creates serious problems for educational and enlightenment activities.
