An unidentified drone crashed in Romania near the border with Ukraine

On Friday, August 14, an unidentified drone crashed on Romanian territory. The incident occurred near the Ukrainian border, but there were no casualties.

The drone was discovered near the village of Lunca Vica in Tulcea County, approximately five kilometers from the border with Ukraine. The circumstances surrounding the drone’s crash are currently being investigated.

According to the country’s Ministry of Defense, the drone crashed in a forested area, and there have been no reports of casualties or property damage.

The ministry stated that radar surveillance systems did not detect the aerial target because it was flying at a very low altitude.

Authorities stated that they will provide additional information at a later time.

This is the third time in three days that Romania has shot down a drone over its territory.

As a reminder, the Romanian prosecutor’s office determined that the drone shot down on July 24 over Buzău County was a Russian “Shahed”-type drone. Law enforcement officials officially confirmed the drone’s origin after conducting the necessary forensic analysis.

On July 24, an F-16 fighter jet of the Romanian Air Force shot down a drone that had entered the country’s airspace for the first time. The incident marked the first combat use of a Romanian F-16 against an intruding drone.

On the afternoon of July 23, an air raid alert was declared in the Romanian county of Tulcea, which borders Ukraine, due to a Russian attack on the Odesa region. 

Four NATO fighter jets were scrambled in response to a drone over Romania.
