The Water Transmission Company (WTCO) consortium and Acwa Power held a preparatory meeting in Damascus, Syria, concerning a trilateral agreement with Syria’s Ministry of Energy. Participants discussed the implementation of the agreement’s provisions and a plan for carrying out projects in the country’s water sector.

Assessment of water resources

As Asharq Al-Awsat reports, the agreement provides for the preparation of preliminary feasibility studies. To this end, Syria’s available water resources are to be assessed, current and future water needs identified, and the optimal combination of seawater desalination with the use of surface and groundwater studied.

Potential projects

The study results are expected to provide a basis for developing integrated desalination and water transmission projects. The source notes that their production and transmission capacity could reach up to 1.2 million cubic meters per day, while the length of transmission networks could total approximately 400 kilometers.

During the meeting, the parties reviewed the work plan, confirmed the agreement’s objectives and its implementation schedule. They also discussed the distribution of tasks, communication mechanisms, and joint work among consortium participants, consultants, and contractors.
