A gold coin featuring Trump's portrait will be minted in the U.S. to mark the country's anniversary

The United States plans to issue a limited edition series of $1 gold coins featuring President Donald Trump.

The coin will commemorate the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence. However, its issuance has sparked controversy, as U.S. law prohibits the use of portraits of living political figures on official currency.

"To mark the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence, the U.S. Mint will begin minting a new $1 gold coin to honor the enduring legacy of freedom and a lasting symbol of patriotism. Featuring President Trump, it celebrates the power of American values and the promise of a nation dedicated to preserving freedom for all,” Bessent explained.

The coin’s design features a portrait of Trump, the inscriptions “Liberty 1776–2026,” and “In God We Trust.”

Legal Prohibition

However, U.S. law prohibits the depiction of a sitting president on currency. In this case, though, it is a collector’s coin, which the Treasury Department may issue at its discretion.

This will be only the second U.S. coin featuring a living president—the first, dedicated to George Washington and Calvin Coolidge and issued in 1926, proved unpopular, and most of the coins were melted down. 

This was announced by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in H.
