When filling out the form, people answered “no” to the question of whether they were U.S. citizens. However, the system still registered them as voters. “Through no fault of their own, the system registered them anyway,” said Miki Sherrill. According to the governor, the glitch lasted from June 2023 to June 2024—even before her administration took office.
A preliminary review showed that fewer than 400 of those who were mistakenly added to the voter rolls actually cast ballots. A statement from the administration noted that among them were voters registered as Democrats, Republicans, and independents. They lived in various parts of New Jersey.
An investigation has been launched
Miki Sherrill reported that she only learned of the problem last week. She subsequently instructed the state’s general counsel to conduct a formal investigation and determine all the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The governor also ordered that all individuals whom the system had mistakenly registered during this 13-month period be removed from the voter rolls. In addition, the Department of Transportation decided to replace the contractor that maintained the system. The contractor in question is Idemia, a company specializing in biometric technologies and security systems.
The scandal arose amid discussions about the elections
News of the glitch emerged at a time when the issue of the accuracy of voter rolls is once again being actively debated in the U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration has recently intensified its focus on election administration and the verification of voter rolls.
Last week, Trump devoted a significant portion of his address to the nation to this topic and called on Republicans to support his plan to audit the November midterm elections. Miki Sherrill reacted sharply to these statements. “When we find a problem, we don’t hide it, deny it, or come up with conspiracy theories. We investigate it, fix it, and report it to the public,” the governor emphasized.
She also stated that Donald Trump has “zero credibility on the issue of election integrity” and accused him of undermining Americans’ trust in the electoral system for many years.
New Jersey authorities are currently continuing to review all records created during the outage. Officials assure that the error is already under control, and once the investigation is complete, they will present a full report with conclusions and measures to help prevent similar situations in the future.
