An outbreak of a dangerous intestinal infection has been reported in the U.S.

In the United States, the number of cases of cyclosporiasis—a parasitic intestinal infection that causes prolonged diarrhea, abdominal pain, and weakness—is rising rapidly. The source of this large-scale outbreak has not yet been identified.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), at least 1,645 cases have been confirmed in 34 states since early May. More than 5,100 additional suspected cases are under investigation. The number of confirmed cases is more than six times higher than during the same period last year.

The highest number of cases has been recorded in Michigan. More than 2,600 cases of cyclosporiasis have been confirmed there, and dozens of people have required hospitalization. Experts suspect that the possible source of the infection may have been greens or lettuce, but a specific product or supplier has not yet been identified.

Increased incidence has also been reported in New York, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky. Epidemiologists are investigating cases that may share a common source.

In light of the outbreak, the Taco Bell restaurant chain has temporarily removed some ingredients from the menu at select locations. The company noted that authorities have not established a link between the illnesses and specific restaurants or suppliers, but the measures were taken as a precaution.

Medical experts remind the public that cyclosporiasis is not typically transmitted from person to person. Infection most often occurs through contaminated food or water. Experts advise avoiding pre-packaged salad mixes, washing vegetables and greens thoroughly, and practicing good hygiene.

Cyclosporiasis is caused by the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis. The main symptoms of the disease include prolonged diarrhea, nausea, loss of appetite, weakness, and weight loss. In severe cases, the infection can lead to dangerous dehydration.
