Gunfire and explosions were heard in Niger’s capital, Niamey, during the night into Saturday and in the morning. The attackers targeted Diori Hamani International Airport, where a military air base is located. They also attempted to breach the security perimeter near the presidency.
Statement by an advisory council member
According to Deutsche Welle English, Bana Wagana Ibrahim, a member of the Advisory Council, described the incident as another attack on Base 101. According to him, defence and security forces brought the situation under control.

Situation in the Sahel
Niger, like neighboring Mali and Burkina Faso, has been under military junta rule for many years. These Sahel countries have also been trying to contain a jihadist insurgency in recent years.
