UK unemployment rate rises to 4.9%
In the United Kingdom, the unemployment rate among people aged 16 and over stood at 4.9% in May–July 2026. This was 0.2 percentage points higher than in the same period of the previous year.
Number of unemployed people
The number of unemployed people in the country reached 1.8 million, increasing by 83,000 year-on-year. The data were published by the UK Office for National Statistics, Anadolu Agency reports.
The estimated employment rate in the latest quarter fell by 0.1 percentage points year-on-year to 75.1%. At the same time, the total number of employed people aged 16 and over increased by 243,000 and reached 34.5 million.

Economic inactivity and redundancies
The economic inactivity rate among people aged 16 to 64 decreased by 0.1 percentage points both year-on-year and quarter-on-quarter, to 20.9%. The number of economically inactive people stood at 9.1 million, which was 12,000 more than a year earlier.
The number of redundancies reached 114,000, increasing by 10,000 over the year.
