Hungary has once again blocked Ukraine's EU accession process
At the first meeting of the Council of the European Union’s Working Group on Enlargement (COELA) following the summer recess, on September 1, the Hungarian delegation once again refused to approve the results of the screening of negotiation clusters 2 and 3 for Ukraine.
Budapest expressed its willingness to support only the screening results for Moldova’s third cluster, effectively reiterating its position from July.
This approach, which involves treating Ukraine and Moldova differently on their paths to EU accession, is not supported by the majority of member states, led by Ireland, which currently holds the EU presidency. The next meeting of the COELA working group is scheduled for September 2, but the issues regarding Ukraine and Moldova are not on its agenda.

Ukraine expects to open the remaining negotiation clusters regarding accession to the European Union by the end of 2026. Prime Minister Serhiy Koretskyi discussed progress on European integration with European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos and stated that the government, together with parliament, is working to accelerate the necessary reforms.
Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys called on allies to support Ukraine’s full membership in the European Union by 2030 following another Russian attack.
