Ukraine is drafting legislation on national minorities, taking Hungary's position into account
Ukraine has developed an action plan in line with European Union requirements regarding the protection of national minority rights and is already working on its implementation. As Taras Kachka stated, the proposed solutions take Hungary’s interests into account and could serve as an important step toward further dialogue between the countries.
Deputy Prime Minister for EU and NATO Integration Taras Kachka told reporters this at the forum “Roadmap on the Rule of Law: One Year After Adoption.”
He noted that the Hungarian government is being formed this week and added that Ukraine has a window of opportunity to ensure everyone understands that opening the first cluster benefits Hungary’s position on protecting the national minority.
"There is a relevant benchmark regarding respect for national minorities in the requirements for European Union member states. There is an Action Plan that we developed alongside this roadmap, and measures regarding national minorities are being implemented. They fully take into account all of Hungary’s interests," Kachka said.
The Deputy Prime Minister noted that for this reason, there is great hope that work will begin once the Hungarian government is formed.
"There are many dates on the calendar when the necessary decisions can be made. And so we truly believe that at the COREPER level—that is, at the level of the permanent representatives of the European Union member states—all six clusters will be approved without delay," he stated.
Kachka expressed hope that this could be done on May 26, but noted that it “wouldn’t be a big problem” if, for technical reasons, it happened on June 16.
"But in order to maintain political unity and solidarity, it is very important, in fact, for the European Union to adopt these decisions and then work together until the end of Cyprus’s presidency of the European Union," he emphasized.
