A Ukrainian man was admitted to a psychiatric hospital following a fatal attack in Poland
A 31-year-old Ukrainian citizen, who was detained following a fatal attack at a monastery in Jarosław, Poland, is currently in a psychiatric hospital. Vasyl Bodnar, Ukraine’s ambassador to Poland, stated that the man may have had mental health issues, but no final conclusions about his condition have been reached yet.
The attack took place on the morning of September 24 in Jarosław, located in Poland’s Podkarpackie Voivodeship. On the grounds of a Benedictine abbey, the man attacked people with a knife. Five people were injured—four men and one woman. One of the victims, a priest, died. The Polish prosecutor’s office reported that the suspect is a 31-year-old Ukrainian citizen. According to preliminary findings from the investigation, he arrived in Poland from Germany that day and was heading toward the Ukrainian border. However, he did not reach the border crossing.
According to the investigation, the man entered the monastery grounds and then made his way into the kitchen. It was there that he presumably took a knife and then attacked the people. The police detained him after the attack. The motive for the crime is currently being determined. Vasyl Bodnar, Ukraine’s ambassador to Poland, provided new details about the suspect. According to him, the man resides in Germany and had attempted to cross the Polish-Ukrainian border the day before. “At this point, everything indicates that he was denied entry due to the lack of an insurance policy,” the diplomat said.
Bodnar also reported that the man is currently in a psychiatric hospital. At the same time, the ambassador emphasized that it is too early to speak about the suspect’s exact condition. “I wouldn’t look for any extraordinary reasons at this point, because sensational headlines can always provoke further escalation of tensions. Furthermore, I am awaiting an official statement from the police, which will provide a precise assessment of his mental state,” Bodnar stated.
The ambassador also stressed that the attack should not be linked to the man’s nationality. According to him, preliminary data do not indicate a national motive for the crime. The Ukrainian Embassy in Poland has already condemned the attack and stated that any violence is unacceptable. Diplomats also reported that the Ukrainian consul is in contact with Polish authorities, the police, and the prosecutor’s office.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also responded to the tragedy. He condemned the attack and stated that the perpetrator must be held accountable in accordance with the law. Polish law enforcement agencies are currently continuing to investigate all the circumstances of the tragedy and the suspect’s motives. Information regarding the man’s possible mental health issues requires confirmation through official findings by Polish law enforcement and medical professionals.
