Man charged in Australia over 11 fires
In Australia, a 29-year-old resident of Nile has been charged with arson and other offences in connection with 11 separate fires in northern Tasmania. They include a major fire near the Midland Highway in Breadalbane, during which power poles were destroyed and local power outages occurred.
Investigation into the series of fires
As ABC News Australia reports, Longford police and the Tasmania Fire Service investigated a series of fires that occurred from August 2025 to April 2026 in the area from Perth to Ulverstone.
The man had previously been charged with arson over a public toilet in the town of Perth. The charges now also concern fires in Longford, Sassafras, Whitemore and Breadalbane, which police believe were likely deliberately lit.

Fire near the highway
The fire in Breadalbane on 20 April spread through dense gorse bushes and other vegetation along the Midland Highway. Twenty fire brigades were deployed to contain it. No one was injured.
Inspector Craig Fox said the fire posed a danger to the public. According to him, law enforcement officers continue to investigate several other fires in the region. The man's next court hearing is scheduled for 24 September.
