In Australia, two men were jailed for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl

The Geraldton District Court in Western Australia sentenced two men who pleaded guilty to sexual penetration of a 14-year-old girl in a van. Clinton Perry Harris, 30, was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison, while Sheldon Todd Barron, 25, was sentenced to two years and two months.

According to ABC News Australia, Harris will be eligible to apply for parole after 16 months in prison, and Barron after 13 months. Both pleaded guilty on the day their scheduled five-day trial was set to begin.

According to the agreed-upon statement of facts, in 2024, Harris exchanged messages with the girl on Snapchat. He bought her a bus ticket from Geraldton to Perth, but after she failed to board the bus, he and Barron drove approximately 440 kilometers from Perth to Geraldton.

The men were traveling in a van from which the passenger seats had been removed and a mattress installed. During the trip to Perth, they stopped on Brand Highway, where, according to the court, they repeatedly sexually assaulted the girl. She asked them to stop; the men ceased their actions for a time but later resumed them.

Judge Lawrence Levy rejected the defense’s argument that, after the girl asked them to stop, both men could honestly and reasonably believe that she subsequently consented to the sexual acts. The men also claimed that they believed the victim was older than 16. The judge called it reckless that Harris did not verify her age, even though she had expressed fear that her father would find out about the encounter.

Harris pleaded guilty to three counts of sexual penetration with a child between the ages of 13 and 16, and Barron pleaded guilty to four. The judge stated that the crime had profound and lasting consequences for the victim and her family, and commended her courage in coming forward to the police.
