In Austria, the body of a tourist from Germany was found following a large-scale search
In the Austrian Tyrolean Alps, the body of a 74-year-old tourist from the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia was found following a large-scale search operation.
According to police, the man likely died after falling from nearly vertical rock faces.
The 74-year-old man from the Olpe district set out on his own for a hike in the Wenediger massif near Pregraten on Monday morning around 8:30 a.m.
However, he did not return to his place of residence. The owner of the residence reported the tourist missing at around 8:50 p.m.
The police immediately launched a search. Initially, a helicopter and a drone were used to survey the area.
In the evening, mountain rescue teams joined the operation with five search dogs. The teams set out on different routes to determine the man’s possible whereabouts.
Rescuers had to work in strong winds and rain. After midnight, they reached a mountain pass at an altitude of nearly 2,800 meters, where searchers believed the missing tourist might be.
However, they were unable to find the man that evening.
On Tuesday morning, a police helicopter conducted another search flight. About an hour later, a body showing no signs of life was discovered near a mountain stream at an altitude of about 2,300 meters.
According to the police’s preliminary assessment, the man strayed from the marked trail while descending from a mountain pass.
Law enforcement officials believe he found himself in an area that gradually became steeper and steeper.
“And then he fell from nearly vertical cliffs,” police said.
The circumstances of the tragedy are currently being investigated.
