There is a proposal in the EU to create an alternative to NATO with Ukraine's participation

A proposal has been put forward in the European Parliament to create a new European Defense Union capable of defending the continent independently of the United States and in close cooperation with NATO, with Ukraine set to become one of its key members. This was stated by MEP and one of the initiative’s authors, Reinier van Lanshot.

According to him, Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine and instability in U.S. policy require Europe to be significantly more independent in security matters. The new bloc will operate on the principle of being “separable but not separated” from NATO, which will allow European countries to act autonomously in the event that Article 5 of the Collective Defense Treaty is not invoked.

It is also proposed to include the United Kingdom and Norway in the security system, and van Lanshot called the Ukrainian army the strongest and most technologically advanced on the continent, noting the possibility of involving Ukrainian military personnel on a voluntary basis in European rapid reaction forces.

The main political body of the new alliance is to be the European Security Council, where decisions will be made by a qualified majority to prevent systematic blocking by individual states. The concept also provides for the establishment of a European military headquarters, an intelligence center, a strategic support unit, rapid reaction forces, and a deterrence mechanism through a provision on mutual assistance within the EU.

Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the Russian army could attack a NATO member state within the next five years. This would test the alliance’s resilience.

Dictator Putin, ahead of a meeting with an American delegation consisting of U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, stated that Russia is allegedly ready to go to war with Europe but has no such intention.

In the event of a Russian attack on NATO members, the Alliance could launch a preemptive strike against targets on Russian territory, according to Admiral Rob Bauer, Chairman of the NATO Military Committee.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy considers it entirely possible that Russia could open a second front against another European country even before the war in Ukraine ends.
