Estonia closes break-in case involving a cat — ERR News
Estonia’s Northern District Prosecutor’s Office has closed criminal proceedings against a man who arranged for someone to break into a stranger’s apartment to retrieve his missing cat. The prosecutor’s office decided that continuing the case was not in the public interest and assessed the man’s degree of guilt as low.
How the cat ended up with a temporary caretaker
As ERR News reports, the cat ended up with the non-profit organization Cats Help, which placed the animal in temporary care. According to Postimees, the caretaker refused to return the cat and published a social media post claiming that the animal had disappeared from her supervision. The owner recognized his cat and decided to retrieve it himself.

Proceedings and compensation
Before acting, the man called the 112 emergency number, asked about the possible punishment and explained his motives. Near the apartment, he pried open a window that had been left open for ventilation, but did not enter himself. Instead, he offered a random passer-by a bottle of vodka to enter the dwelling.
Police opened an investigation under an article on incitement and aiding unlawful entry into a residence. In making its decision, the prosecutor’s office took into account the man’s cooperation, his explanation and his willingness to compensate for the damage. He must pay €152.50 for the window repair and €475 in procedural costs by January 17.
