In Spain, thousands of people are protesting against rising rents
In several cities across Spain, thousands of people took to the streets to protest, demanding stronger protections for tenants. The protests were sparked by Parliament’s rejection of an emergency housing bill proposed by the government.
On Saturday, about 50 marches were planned in Madrid, Valencia, Barcelona, and other cities. In Valencia, clashes broke out between protesters and police during the demonstration: some participants threw objects, and law enforcement officers fired rubber bullets.
The new protests are a continuation of a nationwide campaign addressing housing affordability issues. Earlier, the eviction of an 87-year-old woman who was unable to pay a sharply increased rent caused a significant public outcry.
Protesters are demanding lower rents, an end to evictions, and restrictions on investment funds’ ability to buy up housing. The Madrid Tenants’ Union stated that the measures proposed by the government are insufficient.
