Italy has reported the first case of H9N2 avian influenza in a human in Europe

The first case in Europe of a human infection with avian influenza A(H9N2) has been reported in the Lombardy region of Italy.

Euronews reported this, citing the Italian Ministry of Health.

The patient arrived from outside Europe. He was hospitalized and isolated, and is currently receiving treatment. It is also reported that he has underlying health conditions.

The ministry noted that all contacts have been identified and the necessary tests have been conducted.

According to experts, the virus is transmitted primarily through contact with infected birds or contaminated environments. No cases of human-to-human transmission have been recorded.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control assesses the risk of this strain spreading among the EU population as very low.

As a reminder, the new H5N1 bird flu is spreading in Germany: should we expect an epidemic?

Also, Spain is imposingrestrictions on poultry farmers due to avian influenza.
