UAE says El Niño poses no imminent threat of severe weather
The UAE National Centre of Meteorology said that El Niño does not pose an imminent threat of severe weather to the country, although it may bring above-average rainfall. The centre refuted social media reports of floods and abnormally heavy rain in the Emirates.
Indirect impact of the phenomenon
As The National reports, the National Centre of Meteorology explained that El Niño's impact on the UAE is indirect, as the effects of the phenomenon are concentrated primarily in the Pacific Ocean itself. At the same time, the centre noted that El Niño is particularly strong this year and may mean beneficial rainfall for the country.
Under favourable weather conditions, rain in the UAE can sometimes be heavy, meteorologists added. The centre assured that weather in the country remains stable and is monitored around the clock. It promised to provide advance notice of any significant weather events through official channels, along with the necessary reports and warnings.

WMO forecasts
In July, the World Meteorological Organization reported that El Niño had formed in the tropical Pacific and was forecast to intensify rapidly over the coming months. This increases the likelihood of heatwaves, droughts, heavy rainfall and other extreme weather events in many regions around the world.
In its monthly global seasonal climate review, the WMO noted that a strong El Niño event was rapidly developing between July and September 2026. Forecasts from leading global centres indicated substantial warming of waters in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific: seasonal sea-surface temperature anomalies in some areas could exceed 2°C. The UAE meteorological centre urged the public and media to verify weather information before sharing it and to rely on official sources.
