Poland's Deputy Prime Minister Reported Daily Cyberattacks by Russia and an Increase in Disinformation
Russia is stepping up its hybrid attacks against Poland, combining cyberattacks on critical infrastructure with large-scale disinformation and cyberespionage campaigns. This was stated by Krzysztof Hawkowski, Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Affairs.
According to the official, Polish information systems—particularly critical infrastructure—face hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of cyberattack attempts every day.
“Russia is waging war against Poland. This is a real hybrid war that is already underway,” Hawkowski emphasized.
He noted that Russia is increasingly using information operations against Poland, employing “troll farms,” bots, messaging apps, and social media to spread disinformation and destabilize the situation in the country.
In addition, according to the deputy prime minister, a new campaign is underway in which attackers are impersonating high-ranking Polish officials. To this end, they create fake accounts on the Signal and WhatsApp messaging apps using the names, photos, and other personal information of officials, through which they attempt to obtain confidential information from government agencies, research institutes, and state-owned companies.
“We are dealing with deliberate actions by intelligence services, particularly Russian ones, that seek to destabilize the situation in various ways, including through such operations on messaging apps,” Gavkovsky noted.
According to him, the government has already prepared recommendations for government agencies and enterprises on how to respond to such fraudulent schemes. He also urged citizens to critically evaluate information on the internet, since, as he put it, Russia and Belarus are using all available communication channels to destabilize the situation in Poland.
The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digitalization of Poland made these remarks during an appearance on RMF24.
As a reminder, Poland has warned of possible provocations by Russia involving captured Ukrainian drones.
Poland has announced large-scale exercises to test its public alert system.
